Ice Cream/Pie Contest Ward Activity

For several years now our ward has had water games and ice cream making contest family activity. This year they added a few new things like horseback riding, bike parade and pie contest. We were going to enter our version of Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia, but our ice cream maker needed to be frozen longer. (We only make our ice cream with the Kitchen Aid ice cream bowl and we love it)
This was our first activity since our trips. It seemed like so long ago that we have been in our ward. It was fun to visit with friends, play, and eat some homemade pie and ice cream. The girls decorated their bikes and had fun riding them in the parade. They rode horses that Brother Love provided for the all primary kids to ride. The girls also enjoyed the slip and slide, water balloon toss, water balloon fight, and just running through the water. It was a great activity.

Ashlyn's 1st day of 2nd Grade

Ashlyn started her 1st day of 2nd grade today all dressed up in Hannah Montana style. I can't believe that Ashlyn is already heading back to school. They start school so early here. It makes for a short summer. She is in Mrs. Allen's class and is very excited to be starting a new grade. We think she will have a wonderful school year. This morning she seemed much more relaxed about going back to school than last year.

We're Finally Home

We're finally home after being gone for almost a month. We had a blast on all of our travels, but we are so happy to be home again. It took us 2 days driving home from Colorado. We left around 6am on Sunday and drove all the way to Laughlin, Nevada getting in around 6:30pm. My parents drove with us and we both stayed at the Tropicana Express Hotel Casino. We did a little swimming in the train shaped pool and unwinding in our comfy room. Monday we ate a nice big breakfast, rode the Tropicana Train ride around the Casino, said our goodbyes to my parents and parted our separate ways. After a long way home we finally got home around 7:30pm. What a long drive.

Last Day in Colorado

Well today is our last day in Sanford and Colorado. We spent the day packing and visiting with family.A few more cousins of mine popped over to my grandparents to say hello. The girls ran around and played with my cousins kids and grandpa. We ate lunch with my parents and siblings at Domino's in Alamosa. Around 6pm we headed to my cousin Tyler's house for a BBQ. We had a wonderful visit with him and my cousin Nakala. He made us some great burgers and then gave us the tour of his home he built. We also watched the world premier of the Hannah Montana Concert in 3-DWhen we got back to my Aunt Regina's house she made us s'mores. It was a great finish to a great day spent with family.

Pioneer Days Continues

In this part of Colorado there is another small town besides Sanford that has a two day pioneer celebration and that is the neighboring town of Manassa. Manassa is a little bigger than Sanford(and I mean a little bigger). The two days are filled with a Parade(same one done twice), burger stand, carnival rides, carnival food, live bands, and rodeo. We took this day to enjoy all the fun. We started at 10am by watching a parade similar to Sanford's, but a little longer and some spectacular floats. Then we walked to the the carnival ride area so the girls could ride a few rides. They had a great time and could have stayed here all day. We then walked over to the burger stand(with the missionaries helping take orders and flipping burgers) to grab some lunch. We visited with friends and family from the area. Around 3pm we bought cotton candy for the girls and carmel apples for us. We soon decided to head back to my grandparents and let the girls rest.

That evening we took my brother Aaron to eat at Chili's in Alamosa. Then went to Wal-Mart to do a little back to school shopping for Ashlyn and Autumn(they start school on Monday). Ashlyn choose a Hannah Montana book bag and Autumn decided on a Disney Princess backpack. Both girls picked out Hannah Montana t-shirts to wear on their first day of school.

Pioneer Days

Today is Pioneer Day and a celebration day for Sanford, Colorado. They start the festivities at 7am with a pancake breakfast. 10am is the pioneer day parade that anyone can be a part of. They start at one end of main street and end at the other end of main street. They actually turn around and come back. As the participants go by they throw candy, lots and lots of candy. They even throw otter pops(yummy). The floats were really good and the parade was fun. The missionary float was our favorite. I yelled out to them to throw pass along cards out. They tried to throw one to me. It didn't go that far. After the parade they have a BBQ lunch at the church and at 1pm is the start of the games and races.

We had a family BBQ instead and headed to the kids games first. They have a three-legged race, wheelbarrow race, water games, egg toss, and water-balloon toss. After the kids play those games they have the races. They start with the youngsters, separated by gender, run a short distance and they keep upping the age. They Autumn ran in the 3-4 year old girls and came in 3rd because she stopped to grab the red tape. Ashlyn ran in the 8-9 year old girls and finished some where in the middle. I could not get Noah to race and I was not about to run against the 20-35 age range girls. Those young girls would beat me. My dad was the only adult to brave the races. He ran in the 35 & up men. He did really great considering he is 50+ now and a long distance runner. We all had a great time. Our girls went back to my grandparents house with family while Noah and I went to the Sanford Museum. This small 4 room building is packed with the towns history. I was able to find all my family members senior class pictures on the wall and learn more about how Sanford was established. The greatest find was the small Spanish history section where I was able to read and see pictures of my family. Noah and I enjoyed the quiet time by ourselves.

Our Fishing Trip in Colorado

My dad wanted to go to the mountains and do some fishing today. Everyone was invited so we all got up early and gathered the fishing poles and bait. My cousin Tyler and his little girl stopped by Wal-Mart to buy some food and kiddie fishing poles for the little ones. This was an interesting day because of all the interesting things that happened to us today.

First interesting thing is that we were up early and ready to go but got a really late start. Then we stopped in Antonito, Colo. on the way to buy some more food for lunch and ice. In the same town we stopped at the only gas station in town to buy our day fishing pass. That took a really long time.

When we finally arrived at Elk Trail were we had to find a campsite where we could set up the food and start a fire for hot dogs. The first site was really sunny and hot, but we stayed there, because we were all so hungry. When we went to start the fire no one had matches. My cousin Deanna had to go to another site to ask for a match. We should have known from our late start this was going to be a crazy day. Soon after we ate those who planned to go fishing headed over to the river to fish. The only problem was we left the worms back at my grandparents and my cousin Tyler somehow misplaced the nite-crawlers he bought at Wal-Mart. So we had to search under rocks for worms. The other half of the group went for a hike, but before they could leave they had to help my cousin Deanna get her keys out of her locked car. After a an hour or so of fishing and getting no bites we got in our cars and drove to Red Lake Trail where my family has gone for years. They have creeks running throughout the mountains and you can catch small brook trout. We learned that they loved worms over the salmon eggs we had. We spent a great deal of time searching for worms. As the afternoon went on and we had worms on our hook we did pretty good. Everyone one got bites on the line and just about everyone caught fish. Ashlyn caught her first two fish. Noah caught about six fish. He even caught a minnow that helped to catch a bigger fish. I caught four fish and then we called it a day. It was a wild day, but fun to be with family.

Fort Garland

My dad and mom thought it would be fun to take a family trip to Fort Garland. So we loaded up the vehicles and drove about 45 min. on the Old Hispanic Trail to the Fort Garland Museum. This fort served as protection for the early settlers in the San Luis Valley. Established in 1858 in southern Colorado, Fort Garland, was home to over 100 men that served to protect. We walked from adobe building to adobe building to see where Kit Carson, soldiers and buffalo soldiers once stayed. We were able to see many pictures and artifacts from the fort. They even had archaeologists on site digging to find more artifacts. It was pretty neat to see what they had just dug up.
Later in the evening we went to the Sanford Pioneer Day Pageant. They hold the pageant two nights in a row. The Pageant was a synopsis of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. My Grandpa was in the pageant playing the part of Samuel the Laminite and did a great job. He looked really cute with all of his make-up on.

Mini Family Runion

We arrived at my grandparents home to find all my family, cousins, and aunt all hanging out visiting with one another. We will spend one week hanging out with my mother's side of the family and around Sanford, Colorado enjoying pioneer days.
It was a beautiful day with nice weather so we headed to Cole Park in Alamosa. My grandparents, cousins, my aunt Regina, all my family came to eat lunch together and watch the little ones run and play. It was a lot of fun. We laughed and laughed at some of the funny mishaps that happened at the park that day. We had a great time. That evening Noah and I went with my parents and grandparents to the local library to do some family history research. My dad found a handful of newspaper articles about him when he played sports. It was fun to read and see the pictures of my dad when he was in High School.

Mesa Verde

We woke up to a beautiful day in Cortez, Colorado. We are going to Mesa Verde today. It is only 10 miles to the Mesa Verde entrance from our Hotel. So after a great breakfast at the hotel we packed up and headed there. We stopped at Far View Visitor Center. This is where you can buy self-guided tours, buy tickets to see the big cliff dwellings, and see displays about Mesa Verde and the people that lived here a long time ago.

After we decided what we thought the girls would enjoy we started our adventure. We stopped at Spruce Tree House and took the self-guided tour with the girls. On the way down we saw a baby bird waiting to be feed by its mother. The girls stood and watched the baby bird for awhile. As we walked to the Spruce Tree House we stooped at all the numbered posts to read what was next on the guide. Then we came to the cliff dwelling. It was amazing. The girls thought it was really neat how the Ancestral Puebloans lived in cliff dwellings, all Noah and I thought was how did they live like this with children(this was not as steep or as dangerous as some of the other cliff houses). After the hike back up we stopped in the Chapin Mesa Museum to cool off and look around. The girls picked up a junior ranger application while we were in the museum and filled out the information so that they could receive a badge and become a sworn in junior ranger. They had fill out the questions get it signed and dated by the ranger then they had to raise there right arm and swear to not litter, save water, and recycle. Now that they were junior rangers we drove the six-mile Mesa Top Loop to test out the girls knowledge. On this self-guided drive you can pick and choose where to get out and look. Along this we stopped to see the Pithouse, Square Tower House Overlook, Sun Point Pueblo, Sun Point View(which is one of best spots to see a dozen cliff dwellings) Oak Tree House, Fire Temple and New Fire House, and Sun Temple. The girls had lots of questions about the people that lived here long ago. We tried to bring it to there level of understanding and they were really interested in learning. It was a busy full day at Mesa Verde, but a fun time together as a family. On the way out of the park we stopped over in a tiny town called Mancos where one of my uncles has a burger shop, however they were closed when we got there and had just closed(my uncle was not working there today otherwise he would have stayed open for us). So we drove another 20 min. to Dairy Queen in Durango(Autumn calls it Mango) to eat. After lunch or was it dinner we visited my cousin in my dad's side and his family of an hour or so. It was nice to see him and visit and also let our girls run around and stretch there legs. My cousin has children the same ages as our girls and they had a great time.

We headed back on the road to our final destination in Colorado. On the way we saw about 12 elk and deer on the side of the road. Noah said I was the look out so that we didn't hit any deer or elk while driving. I didn't do a very good job of telling him. I kept telling him after we passed them. We didn't hit a deer or elk, but did hit a red fox. We also enjoyed an amazing lightning storm on our way to my grandparent's home.

Driving to Colorado

So we weren't going to leave for Colorado until Saturday, but we didn't want to keep cleaning up after the girls so we left yesterday afternoon. It was much later than we wanted to leave, but considering we are on Maui time still it works out great. The girls have been going to bed at 11pm which is 8pm Maui time and Noah and I keep going to bed a 2am which is 11pm Maui time. Then we sleep until noon which is 9am in Maui. We know leaving will help get us back on schedule.

The first day all we did was drive and drive for 9 hours to Kingman, Arizona. When we got there at midnight the girls were wired and at 2am we turned off the lights. Noah set the alarm for 6:30 am. That was harsh and we were all so tired when we woke up. We had a nice breakfast at the hotel and headed out on the open road for our first stop on the trip: the Grand Canyon.

We arrived at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon around 2pm after eating lunch at Wendy's. We parked at the Shrine of the Ages and took a free bus shuttle on the village loop to Canyon View Information Plaza. We walked around the plaza and the headed across the street to Mather Point. It was really windy but an amazing sight to see. We the walked along a small portion of the Grand Canyon to Yavapai Point and Observation Station. We stayed there awhile enjoying the displays inside the observation station. We took the bus back to where the car was parked and the drove Desert View Drive to see more interesting things.

We stopped at the Tusayan Indian Ruin and Museum to walk a short loop and see the displays in the museum. The girls enjoyed looking at the museum pictures and the way that the different Indian tribes lived. Our last stop on this road was Watch Tower. This structure was built to give the widest view of the Grand Canyon. It was really neat to walk through this tower and climb up to the top. The view was amazing. The girls thought this tower was Awesome!
We headed out of the Grand Canyon seeing some amazing rock structures(including elephants feet) and on to Cortez, Colorado for another adventurous day.

Last Day in Maui

This has been our home for the past 16 days here in Maui and we loved it. We took the morning to pack and get ready for our flight home. We were sad to leave this beautiful place, but we will be leaving for a mini family reunion in Colorado later on this week. The flight was delayed 3 hours, however we were able to get on an earlier flight which was nice with the girls. We would have gotten in around 2 am. Other than that everyone did really good on the flight. Now we have to get used to the time change.

Maui Day 15

Today was our last full day in Maui and we spent it doing what we love best...Swimming. The girls love the beach and the swimming pool at the condo so why not enjoy it before we have to leave this beautiful island. So thats exactly what we did. Then we headed back to shower and rest a little while. Later on this evening we ordered take out at one of our favorite local resturants Aloha Mixed Plate. We then took our food to a picnic spot by the ocean to watch another beautiful sunset. The girls played and made friends with some locals. They were giving them food, playing tag, and dancing with the other keiki's. On the way home we stopped by Kimos known for their famous Hula Pie. It was really really yummy and the girls loved it. Other than packing up our stuff for the flight tomorrow it was a perfect day in paradise.

Maui Day 13th and 14th

Another beautiful Sunday here in Maui and we slept in most of the morning. With our extra long day yesterday we all slept and slept. The girls woke up around 9:30 and the alarm was set for pm so needless to say we never made it to church. We had a restful day with little going on. Later we did take a drive. It is so beautiful to drive around, because you are right on the oceans edge. You can look out and see amazingly blue water and all that is going on in the water.
Monday July 14th we decided to take everyone to Honolua Bay for snorkeling and plying in the water. This is the same area where Noah and my brother-in-law Kurt went snorkeling and is said to be one of the best spots on Maui. Its not too far from where we are staying and you get to walk through vines, mango tress, lush grasses and plants on a path to the water. There was a lot of people, but once you are out in the water snorkeling you feel so small and insignificant compared to the vast ocean. Noah took me all over and we so saw many different variety of fish, eel, puffers, sea urchins, schools of fish and across the drop off which was so big, blue and amazing. After a break and to check on the girls and Noah's mom we went back out but to the right of the bay. We saw some larger fish on that side and more variety of fish and then we saw them 3 sea turtles. Two were swimming around together and then went down to eat. Then I saw the third one, about two feet from Noah, and it was extremely large(about half the size of him). That totally made our morning!
At 1pm or so we grabbed some lunch and then headed to the pool. After enjoying a little rain on us as we swam we came back to the condo to get cleaned up. Noah's mom was so generous and offered to watch the girts so Noah and I could get some alone time.

Noah made reservations for Mama's Fish House. Their menu changes everyday, because they buy fresh caught fish every morning. They even tell you which fish boat or fisherman and location the fish was caught. You know it is going to be a great experience when you drive up and there is only valet parking. Then you walk through a Banyan tree archway and gecko walkway and are greeted with an Aloha of a women in a floral Hawaiian dress. The grounds are beautiful and the waiting area is lovely also.As Noah and I were waiting to be seated he pointed out that the man being taken to be seated looked like Pat Sajak(the Wheel of Fortune Guy). I looked to my right and sure enough it looked just like him. We also flew on the same fight over to Maui with Disney's High School Musical Star Ashley Tisdale. (Later on we did notice that Pat Sajak and his family were sitting three tables over from us at dinner). So with in a few minutes we were seated on the outdoor covered patio complete with view of the ocean. The restaurant is decorated so nice and gives you a nice Hawaiian feel. We ordered a Polynesian beef served in a grilled mango which was excellent and really tender.

For dinner Noah ordered the a Coconut mahi mahi and Ono with kalua pork and a variety of fresh grilled fruit. I ordered the Crab stuffed Mahi Mahi with a Tristan Lobster on top fresh corn and asparagus and rice pilaf. The fish was cooked just right and my mahi mahi was so tender it was melting away on my fork. It was the best seafood meal I have ever eaten. We loved it and highly recommend it. It was an amazing dinner.

When we got back into Lahaina we walked around front street and stopped in Hard Rock Cafe for dessert. They were also setting up for a live local band to play. Marty Dread is one of the local favorites and has quickly become one of our favorite Hawaiian Reggae singers. We left before they finished setting up, but sat outside by the waters edge listening ocean waves and to a couple of his songs before heading home. It was a wonderful evening and one that I will remember. I was very grateful to have spent a few hours together and to enjoy one another's company.

Maui Day 12

Saturday July 12th we decided to head to the road to Hana to play and hike on that side of Maui. We made a quick stop at the swap meet in the morning for some fruit and gifts we still needed to get. Then we ate at Mc Donald's as we headed out.
It took us 2 hours on this beautiful, but windy road to get to our destination Haleakala State Park. We wanted to hike up to the falls. The Pipiwai trail is one of the most best hikes on the island. It's 2 miles each way and you gain 650 feet. We didn't think the girls would make it, but they did an amazing job.(it took about 3 hrs.) We passed by several mango grooves, thick grassy areas, several falls, including Makahiku Falls which falls 200 feet. We crossed a couple of bridges and walked through an incredible thick bamboo forest. And then we saw the 400 foot waterfall slicing down the back of a three way sheer wall of lava. Waimoku Falls is where the trail ends and what a way to end it.
When we got back to the parking lot there was still enough sun light to play in Ohe'o Gulch aka Seven Sacred Pools. We needed to cool off, relax and swim in one of the most amazing settings ever. We left the park at dusk and had a long way home. We got back to what seemed like civilization around 9pm but the girls and grandma were all sleeping. So we ordered some pizza as we got closer to our condo and picked it up on the way. I think we finally turned out the lights around midnight. What a fun, but tiring day we all had.

Maui Day 10 and 11

After being here over a week now and having come to Maui before we have pretty much done all the main touristy things to do. So this next week has been going to places that we have never seen or done before and doing our favorites over again. Thursday July 10th we decided to take it easy with Ashlyn still feeling pretty rotten, so we drove Upcountry. Upcountry is the area of towns that are located 2,000 to 4,000 feet up the slope of Haleakala. We drove to Kula and drove on Waipoli Rd. to Ali'i Kula Lavender Garden. They have lavender everything, pillows, jellies, scones, chocolate, perfumes, mists, lotions, bubble bath, sunscreen, and many other items. After a small walk through their gardens we drove back into town. Next we wandered around Kula to find the oldest LDS church building still standing in Hawaii built in 1850. After driving circles around town for 45 min. or so, we were about to give up, when we saw the top of the church. We were able to walk the grounds and go in the small one room church building. It was pretty amazing to see the old pictures, old hymn books and old wooden benches. We then drove through Makawao to Pa'ia over to Ho'okipa Beach Park to see if there were any wind surfers. We didn't see to many people even in the water, but we walked the beach and were able to look at the tide pools. We even had a little fish come out of the water to play with us. A little Manini Convict Tang came flying out of the ocean waves landing on the sandy beach. We held him and put him back in the ocean. When we got back to the condo we ate dinner and went for a nice evening swim. Friday July 11th we headed to downtown Lahaina for a walking tour. You start on Front Steet at the Baldwin Home and pick up a walking tour map. Then you can do a small walking loop or a bigger one. We started at the small loop. It was pretty cool we saw the old courthouse, old jail, the oldest Bayan Tree in Hawaii., fort ruins, oldest inn, and old palace ruins. We were all hot and tired after the small loop and so we decided to head over to baby beach again to play. After about 3 hours of fun in the sun we came back to the condo, cleaned ourselves up, and ate dinner quickly so we could go to the Warf Cinnema Ceneter to watch Wall-E. It was a fun show and the girls enjoyed it.

Maui Day 8 and 9

Tuesday July 8th was a pretty kick back day. We decided it was time to do some laundry and so Anissa and my mom went down to the laundry mat that the condo provides for its residents while I sat and watched my three girls and my nephew Logan(my sister and brother in-law went on a snorkel trip for part of the day). When they were done with the washing and the kids had full bellies we made our trek down to the swimming pool. We had a great playing in the pool and enjoying the sunny Maui day. In the evening we watched another beautiful sunset and did a little shopping in Lahaina. Wednesday July 9th we awoke to Ashlyn crying about how bad her ears were hurting. After a great pancake and eggs breakfast I decided to call the local Kaiser in Lahaina and set up an appointment for Ashlyn and find out why her ears were hurting so bad(I had my suspicions). With my sister Rachel, brother-in-law Kurt and Logan leaving we attempted to take some family pictures on the beach and then said our goodbyes to them. Their fun time in Maui was coming to a close. At the doctors Anissa kept the two little girls busy while I took Ashlyn in to see the doctor. It was confirmed that she had an ear infection in her right ear and water behind her ear drum in her left ear. He gave me a prescription for both and hopefully she will start to feel better. Since we were in Lahaina we took advantage of our time there and walked around the Hale Kahiko. It is replica of a Hawaiian village. It was neat to see how they lived and what they lived in. We then walked over to the Glow Putt Miniature Golf. We had a great time playing. Anissa and I both scored a 40 and my mom beat me by 1 making her the winner with a score of 39. We celebrated with ice cream from Coldstone Creamery. We drove back to the condo to let the girls rest. Later in the evening we went for a sunset walk and then a swim in the pool.

Maui Day 7

Today was an amazing day. It was the kind of day that you expect in Maui. We took the girls to Baby Beach(a beach well known to the locals to be for the keikis or kids). This beach is very calm with lapping waves. The girls could swim and play in the water with little worries of being knocked down by waves. It is very shallow for many feet, because the reef breaks way out in the ocean. We spent 3 hours playing in the water and having a great time. There was some coral gardens as you went out further and an easy place for kids to snorkel. We tried to get the girls out there, but because of the distance from the shore they thought it was deep (it only came up to our waist) Ashlyn did find a sea cucumber. She was gathering broken coral and rocks when she found it picked it up thinking it was a rock and then noticed it was different. She ran over to us and said "I think I found a sea creature." We looked in her bucket and sure enough it was something squishy from the sea.We came home and rested for a couple hours and then got ourselves ready for the Luau. We went to Old Lahaina Luau. We have gone to this before and loved it. The price is a little steep, but we think the price is worth it. They opened the gates at 5:45 with live Hawaiian music playing. We were shown to our assigned seats and then we were free to wonder the beautiful Luau grounds. They had stations set up in various locations giving demonstrations of Hawaiian handicrafts and cultural items. After the pig was removed from the imu (an underground oven) we went back to the table to eat. They have an all you can eat buffet with lots of yummy traditional Hawaiian food and yummy tropical drinks. While we finished dinner they started their hour long show. The show is a history of Hawaiians. The story begins with the early Polynesian migration to the Hawaiian Islands, and the progression of hula from ancient to the present. It was a wonderful evening and the we all really enjoyed ourselves.

Maui Day 5 and 6

Saturday July 5th the girls, grandma, my sister-in-law Rachel and her son Loagan and I got up early to shop the local swap meet. I have shopped this before and they have some awesome deals. We shopped until noon getting jewlery, clothes, fruit, music CDs, and other fun take home items. We ate some lunch at Mc Donalds and then waited for Noah and my brother-in-law Kurt, who went snorkeling at Ho'onolua Bay, to join up with us. While we waited we did some time shopping at the Queen Kahamia Mall.

When we finally joined up with Noah, his mom, the girls, and I went to explore South Maui. We started in Kihei, droving along the ocean through Waile, and to Makena. We saw some of the nicest resorts and golf courses in Maui. We stopped to check out Makena Beach and Big Beach both were very nice. We drove to La Perouse Bay which is at end of the road and as far as we could travel by car in South Maui. As we drove we passed lava fields. On the hill there is a split lava mound this is where the last eruption on Maui took place. La Perouse is well know for the wind and dolphins we only encountered the wind.

Sunday July 6th we went to church in Lahaina. It was really nice and the girls had a great time in Primary. We had the view of the ocean from the front doors which was pretty awesome, but distracting. We went back to the condo to rest and organize our room. After dinner we drove up north from our condo to see the sights on west side of Maui. There are some pretty cool things to see here, but we didn't really get out to see them . We will be back up that way another day. We did see another beautiful sunset though.

Maui Day 4

Friday July 4th, we decided to play in the sand at the beach. Our Condo is situated right in front of Ka'anapali Beach which is on the north side of Black Rock. This beach is said to be one of the best beaches in the world. Noah and I did some snorkeling out there and saw lots of fish. The girls had a blast building sand castles and playing in the warm sand. After the beach we headed to the swimming pool. Noah helped design the pool at the Condos and did a great job. The girls love the one foot deep kiddie pool and the waterfalls that are in the middle of the pool flowing from the bridge. We headed back to the condo to make some good old fashioned 4th of July lunch, hamburgers, chips, and watermelon.

Later in the afternoon we drove through Lahaina to see what 4th of July festivities were taking place. Not a whole lot was going on so we drove to Whalers Village to look at the shops and eat dinner at Hula Grill(one of our favorite places). Hula grill has beach front eating where they have a live band, amazing sunsets, and soft sand for your feet to rest and play in. We then headed to a a clients house that Noah works with, to watch the fireworks from his lanai and light up fireworks in their culdesac. It was a great 4th of July and made us appreciate how blessed and grateful we are to live country with so much freedoms.

Maui Day 3

Thursday July 3rd we got up at 6am(this is a trip that should be started early. We left about 8am) to drive the long and winding, but very beautiful and lush road to Hana. Hana has lots of one-lane bridges and about 600 curves in the road. Noah and I have driven this road 3 times. We have enjoyed it every time and every time it has been different. We started our journey in the valley of sugar. It is 37,00 acres of sugar cane fields. The last town you visit is Paia. This is a small and very unique town they say "it is where it's still the Age of Aquarius and shoes are always optional in the street".

On the road you travel a few miles and find yourself on Highway 360 and shortly there after come to your first of many waterfalls(however this was the first time we drove and didn't see as many waterfalls). We turned off at the overlook to see Ke'anae peninsula. Our first official stop was in the small village of Ke'anae where we bought the best banana on the island(moist and sweet), took a potty break and saw the jagged lava boulders. The tide was really low so we go to see some small tide pools with some fish and other marine life. We stopped in front of Waikani Falls (aka the 3 bears) for a photo.

Our next stop was Pua'a Ka'a State Park to see a small waterfall and a small pool to swim in. We took photos and thought about swimming, but didn't. We did see a proposal in front of the falls were the girl said yes.

We ate lunch at Wai'anapanapa Park (Black sand Beach). We saw mongoose, walked a short loop to see two spring fed caves, walked down to the volcanic black sand beach and walked through a lava tube. As we were driving through Hana something hit our van. I got out to see what it was and to make sure we didn't have a dent(it was a really loud thump). I didn't see anything on the ground, but remnants of mango still lingered on the hood of the van as Autumn said very animated "there was a loud bump noise and this mango bounced off of our car and rolled into the dirt!"

In Hana we stopped at one of the many fruit stands on the side of the road. It is all based on the honor system. They leave there goods that they are trying to sell on their stand along with the prices and you take what you want and put your payment in a locked box. I bought a strawberry papaya and four bananas(they were really really sweet and yummy!)

In Hana Bay we stopped to buy shaved ice Noah and I both bought the passion fruit. It was very refreshing and just the right sweetness. Our last stop was 'Ohe'o Gulch AKA Seven sacred Pools. It is part of Haleakala National Park. It is very beautiful here and has a waterfall that falls into a pool several times over and over again. In the past when we have visited we have been unable to swim in the pools due to the raging water that was flowing down and into the ocean. Ashlyn called it the raging river of death. Noah and I have been waiting three years to swim in these so called pools, well with summer and not much water at this time our wish came true. We were able to walk down to these pools and swim in(the raging river of death) the 40 foot deep pool and watch all those brave people jump the cliffs into the clear fresh water. It was an amazing and unique experience. Ashlyn loved it!(the other two girls slept in the car with grandma)

We headed back home on the only way there and saw one of the locals jump into a pool at the bottom of one of the waterfalls and enjoy a colorful double rainbow over the ocean. What a wonderful adventure we had today.

Maui Day 1 and 2

Tuesday July 1st we started our 16 day Hawaii adventure by flying from San Fransisco to Los Angles, and then to the Island of Maui. The flights were not too bad and the girls did pretty good considering we traveled a total of about 12 hours. When we arrived in Maui it was 9:30pm with a 3 hour time difference. It was warm and raining off and on. We were really tired so we hurried as fast as we could to settle into our condo and make it our home for the next two weeks..

Today July 2nd we took a drive to Wailuku in Central Maui into Ioa Valley to see Ioa Needle. It is rock formation covered with lush green vegetation that is 1,200 feet above the beautiful valley floor. We also walked along a path through a botanical garden. We then went to Kepaniwai Park and walked through some really neat Heritage Gardens which contained buildings and gardens from different ethnic groups(from Japan, Korea, China, Philippines, Portugal, and England) that have settled the Islands. We grabbed some lunch and then went food shopping at Walmart and Costco. We topped the night off with swimming in the pool. I was a wonderful 1st official day in Maui.
